Some of the services provided by the Centre are:
The Saartjie Baartman Residential Programme and Second Stage Houses
The Residential Programme provides a 24-hour crisis response for women and their children who are being abused in their homes. There are trained staff members on duty at all times and the facility is open all year including public holidays. The Residential Programme houses on average 22 women and 35 children who stay in the Residential Programme for four months.
Empowerment Programme
The Empowerment Programme focuses on strengthening the human rights of women and children. It offers emergency counselling, short-term individual and group counselling and support, legal advice and assistance to women and children who walk into the SBC for help or who are participating in the residential programme. The Programme is also involved in outreach work, providing education and awareness-raising on gender-based violence to schools, corporates and civil society in general. The team is consists of a social worker, social auxiliary worker, children’s counsellor, legal advisor, para-legal assistant and psychology/social work interns.
Partnership development and coordination
The Saartjie Baartman Centre is a partnership initiative. The whole strength and emphasis of the Centre rests on working in partnership – promoting inclusiveness, dialogue, shared responsibility, an integrated approach and joint decision making.
Facilities for Hire
Uses
The Saartjie Baartman hall and boardrooms may be hired for training courses, meetings, conferences or other functions by any organization wanting a venue in the greater Athlone area. They are available seven days a week, including evenings.
Catering Project
The catering project provides a professional catering service to on-site partners, communities, NGOs and the corporate sector who either hire our venues or require catering services at other venues within Cape Town. It also forms part of the skills development project by providing Chef Assistant and Canteen Assistant training to Centre clients.
